streets next to a high school. >> anne makovec joins us now live with the suspect's condition and what officers found inside his car. anne, good afternoon. >> reporter: yeah, a very large gun, frank. i'm here on gough and ellis, and two blocks of gough still closed down this afternoon. they have been for several hours t -- it all started on the driveway of that white car. a man was pulling out of that driveway and confronted by police, then the shooting began. the man's car careened across gough street. you can see the gray honda, that's where it hit those parked cars and remains this afternoon. now, here's a look at the gun that officers say they pulled from the parolee's car. it appears to be an ak-47, one of several weapons he said on his person and in his car when he was shot and hit several times by police. it all started around 8 a.m. on gough and ellis. police have been searching for him for days after reports he was shooting a gun in this

neighborhood. he was wanted on a $75,000 warrant. plainclothes officers approached him as he was leaving the garage where he had reportedly been living. here's what the chief says happened next. ska the officers engaged the suspect in an attempt to arrest him, identified themselves as police officers, at which time the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband, from items left on the ground there's a holster attached to his pants. we believe he fired at least one time upon the officers. the officers returned fire. >> reporter: now, the man was wounded but he is expected to live. he was taken to san francisco general hospital. all we know about the suspect is that he was asian, 36 years old and a wanted parolee. police won't say what he is wanted for. back live on gough street, you can see all those little yellow

markers behind me, the shell casings. the preparatory school is up above that gray car right now as well as the high school. they are on summer break so some students were there but not a lot. and they say that none of their operations were affected by the shooting or this road closure. back to you guys. >> anne, for anyone who lives in that area or has to drive through, any idea when they might clear the investigation? >> reporter: i would assume it's going to be sometime early afternoon. they have to get rid of the car that was involved in this obviously. but they have been out here since 8 a.m. so presumably sometime within the next couple of hours. >> anne makovec live in san francisco, thank you. a late-night robbery in fairfield has left a convenience store owner dead. police say before the man died, he told them that he was attacked by three men inside the store last night. friends say the man had worked a long time at the store off east travis boulevard. they are remembering him as a nice guy and many don't

understand why anyone would hurt him. >> hurts my heart, man. that's sad. >> suspect stole several items from the store including a cash register and a video recorder. witnesses say three teens entered the store at the time of the robbery. the search is on for two men accused of kidnapping and robbing a woman in san jose. police say the two hispanic men forced the elderly woman in their car at a wal-mart back in may. then they drove to a wells fargo bank and withdrew money from her account. the woman said she didn't immediately call police because the men threatened to kill her. it was a harrowing night for three fishermen after their boat capsized in san francisco bay. the coast guard rescued the men from a raft shortly after midnight near the golden gate bridge. the crabbers say that their load shifted unexpectedly and overturned their boat. >> we just rolled a load of gear shifted on the deck and

the pilot took a roll hard to port, boat went over, wouldn't come back so that's all -- that's -- it happened real quick. >> one of the three crabbers was taken to the hospital. president obama holding his third news conference so far this year. the focus, the economy and debt ceiling. lawmakers have to strike a deal raising the debt limit by august 2 or the government may default on its loans. but as danielle nottingham reports, there are deep divides over where the cuts will be made. >> reporter: president obama wants to show americans he is focused on the economy. in his first white house news conference in three months, the president is talking about jobs. >> there are more steps that we can take right now that would help businesses create jobs here in america. >> reporter: the latest cbs news-"new york times" poll shows the president's job approval rating at 47%, down 1 point from earlier this month. just 39% approve of his

handling of the economy. the white house is also in a battle with congress over the budget and raising the debt ceiling. president obama has called on lawmakers to increase the nation's borrowing limit by august 2. >> nobody wants to put the creditworthiness of the united states in jeopardy. nobody wants to see the united states default. >> reporter: debt ceiling talks with republicans have stalled, on the president urged them to agree to limit tax breaks for oil company and the wealthy. >> i think it would be hard for the republicans to stand there and say that the tax breaks for corporate jets is sufficiently important that we're not willing to come to the table and get a deal done. >> reporter: the gop does not want any tax increases as part of the deficit reduction deal. >> in the middle of a jobs crisis, they want to slam already struggling businesses with a massive tax hike. >> reporter: the president will meet again today with democrats but so far, no new meeting has

been scheduled with republicans. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. back here in california, governor brown is expected to sign that new state budget plan into law today. it was approved last night without republican support. lawmakers say that the plan closes what is left of the state's deficit, about $9.6 billion. however, it does call for some massive cuts including five billion to health and human servicings, a billion to the corrections -- health and human services, a billion to the corrections department, 650 million each to the uc and california state university systems. bart continues to negotiate settlements related to the death of oscar grant. ex-bart officer johannes mehserle shot and killed the unarmed train passenger at the fruitvale station on new year's day of 2009. yesterday, bart agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by grant's mother. >> what would make me satisfied is that my son would be here.

that is what would satisfy me. >> we took responsibility right after the shooting for what happened. i mean, we -- before anybody was talking settlement and lawsuits. >> but while the payout is not a legal admission of fault, bart accepts responsibility from five cops that were involved. each is being sued by six other people including grant's father, for claims including illegal arrest and excessive force. a train attendant has filed the first lawsuit in the deadly crash between a truck and amtrak train last friday in nevada. the woman who was injured accuses negligence on the part of truck driver and his employer. she is seeking $10,000 in damages. investigators say the truck driver smashed into the train on friday and killed six people. the cause still under investigation. well, getting a job promotion may have nothing do with how skilled you are. the top things employers are looking for when they are deciding to reward you.

including bank of america-- which settled with investors examine. how about some good news today? stocks up across the board, 72 and some change, all thanks to several factors, including bank of america, which settled with investors over failed mortgage securities. and another reason, greek politicians finally passed a crucial vote to avoid bankruptcy in the country.

but that hasn't stopped the violence in the streets. as charlie d'agata reports, protestors against the financial deal say their fight will go on. reporter: riot police fought running battles against protestors on the streets of athens. demonstrators did everything they could to block politicians from entering the parliament building. but their anger did not get in the way of the vote in favor of a $40 billion package of spending cuts and tax hikes. [ foreign language ] >> reporter: greek politicians had to pass the legislation to qualify for another international bailout. without that $12 billion injection, greece was headed for bankruptcy next month. the greek prime minister said voting in favor of the package was the only way to keep the country from collapsing. but protestors say the austerity package puts an unfair burden on the working class. >> our lives would be worsened and no -- there is not going to be any future for us near

greece. >> reporter: some say they will ignore any demands to pay more taxes. >> we cannot stand them. we cannot pay. we are not going to pay. that's the message we are going to send to the whole europe, the whole world. >> reporter: a second crucial vote takes place on thursday to change laws so strict new measures could be implemented. charlie d'agata, cbs 5. >> it started as a tribute to hundreds of people who died in egypt's revolution, but the gathering in tahrir square became violent. authorities fired tear gas and rubber bullets after thugs attacked the interior ministry. one doctor says at least 52 people have been injured, some quite seriously. now to new mexico where the wildfire threatening a nuclear weapons lab is growing. flames reached within 50 feet of the los alamos national laboratory. the lab is the historic birthplace of the atomic bomb and houses radioactive material. scientists are sampling the air

for chemicals and radiological chemicals. the fire is fueling the fire which is now about 70,000 acres. >> i'd seriously believe it could go to 100,000 acres. i hope not. but there is unburnt fuel throughout. >> all 12,000 people of the town of los alamos fled town yesterday under a mandatory evacuation order. that fire started sunday. the cause is unknown. new information has an expert changing his mind about what caused last september's san bruno pipeline explosion. pg&e releasing some documents last week that show the pipeline had operated under a wide range of pressures over several decades. remember the state panel that investigated the -- a member of the state panel that investigated the blast says the pressure changes could have weakened the pipe. it earlier thought vibration from a nearby sewer project might have caused the disaster. pg&e is cutting the maximum pressure on a peninsula pipeline. the line is just north of the one that exploded last summer. a video inspection showed what

treating breast cancer, a conclusion from a panel of federal cancer experts. today the fda panel ruled that the world's best selling cancer drug provides little benefit and causes dangerous side effects. the fda previously said the same thing. but it held a second hearing after the makers of avastin protested the finding. johnson & johnson is recalling more than 60,000 bottles of tylenol extra strength caplets because of a musty moldy smell. the pills were made in february of 2009. the odor has been linked to a trace chemical known to cause temporary stomach ailments. and we were talking about this. summer skiing. >> i know. you might have to chain up, though. take your chains. kidding, of course. but there is a lot of snow up in the sierra. just take a look. and not just flurries but a full-lush blanket of white covering. this is lake tahoe, a live pic right now at sierra tahoe ski resort. and it looks like the 4th of july there's going to be a lot of snow up there. squaw is open. alpine is open. and pretty -- the lake's open, too. but i think it will be a little

cold. >> the forecast in that area, i definitely feel bad for those guys. conditions are cold right now. they are going to get warmer, i promise, by the weekend. we have a high pressure ridge that's building nicely. in the meantime, let's take a look outside. we are seeing mostly cloudy skies. here's a lovely shot of the transamerica building. we are seeing those clouds rolling on by towards the east. plenty of moisture in the atmosphere but this will dry out by later today into tomorrow paving the way for a very nice weekend. let's take a look at our current temperatures. santa rosa 62. 61 napa. oakland 61. temperatures below average because of the cold front and clouds keeping things cooler. this afternoon, temperatures in the 50s to low 70s. a mix of sun and clouds. still seeing those chances of scattered showers. sunset tonight 8:35 p.m. for tonight we'll see partly cloudy skies. still trending below average. low to mid-50s for the forecast

region. here's a really good look at the satellite image here. we can see the slow moving towards the east. a lot of the precipitation already out of the area. we still are seeing remnants for the northern region but that's just because it's making its way and then we have this high pressure ridge that's headed right behind it. expect that here by tomorrow into monday and tuesday. then a little change. but let's enjoy what we have, this high pressure ridge that's going to keep conditions nice and warm. the expected highs for tomorrow, a bit warmer than today. santa rosa 68 and redwood city. pacifica 60. 69 for livermore, fairfield 72 the expected high. cloud cover, partly cloudy skies all around, but then here's a good look at the extended forecast. we are going to see a warmup, definitely a big warmup on the way. we have high 60s to the low 90s for friday. and 90s trending through saturday and sunday. and then triple digits possibly for monday. so grace and frank, is it going to be hot enough for you?

>> that will work after yesterday's rain. >> it won't last long. thank you. hard work and creativity will help get you a job. and apparently, it kind of matters how you look, too. a survey from career builder shows that employers definitely consider personal attributes but piercings, tatoos, bad breath, wrinkled clothes and messy hair at the top of the list. so clean up before you interview. a third of all hiring managers surveyed said each of those attributes would make them less likely to give a promotion. and collecting that paycheck could be hazardous to your health. a study finds that people have a better chance of dying on or near your payday. researchers say when people get paid, they are more likely to leave the house and look for ways to go out and spend the money. that leaves these people open to potentially risky situations like car accidents. >> that works.

well, today's tip of the day is going to be was one of the produce items that we best buyed. we do this every week to give you a little more value and selection on one of the items. today it's going to be on blackberries. look how beautiful they are. and this time year, in the summer, they have to look like this. if they're lighter don't buy it. when you see them in trays like this, look under the tray. if there is any moisture water in the tray, that's a telltale sign there's decaying blackberrys in there and you don't want them. blackberrys when this ripe, loaded with nutritional value, they decay quickly. so buy them and put them in the refrigerator right away. that's so important.
